Whenever a significant prize-giving event draws close, there’s always an outcry to include of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything in 2014
- A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
- Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often small games, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
