Roughly 50 automobiles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.
Police say they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then found multiple other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials report initial examinations show the fluid was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; authorities are currently not informed of any harm in association with the event," they commented.
City officials stated they were working "to resolve the case" and have appealed to the community for tips.
An important representative stated the vandalism left him speechless and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This event hits the center of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on social media, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
